Abstract

Data science is an interdisciplinary research field with focus on combining information from multiple and complex data sources to support interpretation and decisions. The digital revolution has caused an overwhelming increase in data covering all aspects of human life; hence, methods in data science are imperative in order to create value from data. Machine learning is one of the most important tools in data science and its ability to learn from data enables large-scale data interpretation, analysis, and prediction. Although machine learning has been a well-established research field for decades, it has recently become very popular in many application areas.

The lecture will feature examples of machine learning and artificial intelligence research related to audio and sensor information and point to current limitations. A key question is how to integrate machine learning, natural interaction and autonomy. The magic tool might be lurking within the new field of cognitive systems.
