At DTU, educating the most competent engineers in Europe remains a strategic focus area. Achieving this requires excellence in teaching, alongside ambitious educational and assessment approaches that evolve in step with technological advances and the changing needs of society and industry.
The Novo Nordisk Foundation’s PREPARE programme supports the development of research-integrated and practice-oriented teaching activities at universities, with a particular focus on the natural sciences and engineering.
Nicki Skafte Detlefsen (DTU Compute) – Large Scale AI
Associate Professor Nicki Skafte Detlefsen has been awarded DKK 2.5 million for the project Large Scale AI. The project will establish a new DTU course in which master's students gain hands-on experience in developing, deploying and scaling AI systems, progressing from single-machine environments to distributed systems powered by more than 50 GPUs.
The objective is to strengthen Danish students’ capabilities in large-scale artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and distributed machine learning, while integrating national AI infrastructure into teaching. This includes the Gefion supercomputer, operated by the Danish Centre for AI Innovation (DCAI).
Jakob Bardram (DTU Health Tech) & Steven Andersen (UCPH) – BioDesign with Innovation Labs & AI-Coached Programmatic Assessment
Professor Jakob Bardram, serving as co-applicant, has been awarded DKK 5 million for the development of the project BioDesign with Innovation Labs & AI-Coached Programmatic Assessment: An Innovation Framework for the MED-STEM Programme.
The project will support the development of a forthcoming joint degree programme between DTU and the University of Copenhagen, designed to bridge the gap between medical and engineering education.
While medical students acquire strong clinical competencies, they often have limited exposure to technology development and innovation. The initiative aims to equip students with the skills needed to translate clinical challenges into tangible technological solutions. Through innovation-based learning activities and AI-supported portfolio assessment, the project will foster interdisciplinary expertise across medicine, technology and innovation among future healthcare professionals. The project is led in collaboration with Dr Steven Andersen of the University of Copenhagen, who serves as principal applicant.
Md Saifuddin Khalid (DTU Compute) & Ege Rubak (Aalborg University) – AI-Assisted Oral Examination (OREX-AI)
Associate Professor Md Saifuddin Khalid, serving as co-applicant, has been awarded DKK 7.1 million for the project AI-Assisted Oral Examination: Personalised Questioning, Automated Grade Recommendation, and AI-Mediated Practice Exams for Large Statistics Courses.
The project will develop and test a GDPR-compliant AI chatbot designed to support both oral examinations and exam preparation. The solution will assist examiners in structuring assessments while providing students with access to AI-driven practice opportunities and feedback.
Its goal is to enhance the quality, consistency and scalability of oral assessment formats through AI-assisted examination and training. The project is being carried out in collaboration with the principal applicant, Associate Professor Ege Rubak of Aalborg University.
