General course objectives

To provide an overview of personal data protection, data protection regulation, privacy models and privacy protection approaches.

Learning objectives

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental legal principles of data protection legislation, e.g. GDPR
  • Apply data protection principles to a given application scenario
  • Understand fundamental privacy principles and privacy enhancing technologies
  • Analyze a given application scenario to identify potential data protection issues
  • Propose procedures and controls to mitigate identifies data protection issues
  • Identify data minimization and privacy enhancing technologies to implement these controls
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of proposed data protection procedures and controls
  • Discuss privacy and data protection in a data ethics context

Content

Privacy models, privacy-by-design, privacy enhancing technologies, anonymization, privacy- preserving data mining. Students will work with application examples from their own organizations to identify privacy and data protection issues, propose remediating procedures and controls and evaluate the effectiveness of these measures for a given system.
