Øresundsdagen 4

Dear all,

In the past year, the improvement of AI technology has been staggering. Just as with graphic calculators in the 1980s and 1990s, and CAS in 2000s and 2010s, AI-based tools are becoming part of the toolbox of every students. Already, such tools reliably solve most problems we give students in their first-year of undergraduate mathematics studies. Like it or not, this is changing how students engage with mathematics.

To explore the implications of AI in introductory mathematics education at the university level, Mathematics NF at Lund University and DTU Compute are pleased to invite you to Øresundsdagen 4. The event will take place at the Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen (DTU) on Wednesday, November 6th, 2024.

The purpose of Øresundsdagen is to provide mathematicians, mathematics education researchers, teachers and other stakeholders involved in university mathematics education with a forum to exchange experiences and insights and discuss current challenges. This time, we specifically want to explore the following question:

- How should, and should not (!), AI shape the future of introductory mathematics education at the university level?

To stimulate discussion and provide valuable insights, we have invited the following keynote speakers to shed light on what capabilities we can expect from AI technologies in the near and medium term, and indicate implications for undergraduate mathematics teaching.

- Ulrik Juul Christensen, CEO, Area9 Lyceum, Boston, MA, USA.

- Tor Ole Bigton Odden, Associate professor, Center for Computational Science Education, University of Oslo.

For more information regarding the event and registration, check out https://oresundsdagen.compute.dtu.dk/. Make sure to register via the website by September 15, 2024.

We encourage presentations from participants to share their experiences and insights on this topic or other urgent agendas (approximately 20 minutes). If you wish to give a presentation, please indicate this when registering. All presentations will be held in English.

The program will run from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, followed by a conference dinner to continue our discussions. There is no registration fee, and lunch as well as coffee will be provided (dinner cost await funding approval). Unfortunately, we cannot cover travel or accommodation expenses.

Best wishes,
Jan-Fredrik Olsen, Lund
Kim Knudsen, DTU
