In the past ten years, antimicrobial use has decreased in Danish pigs, increased in calves

In 2019, Danish pig producers reached the target for reduction of antimicrobial usage set by the MRSA action plan. In contrast, antimicrobial use in calves has increased considerably over the last ten years. These are some of the findings in this year's DANMAP report from Statens Serum Institut and the National Food Institute, Technical...

Foods we can trust

Foods may contain substances that can have a harmful effect on our health. The National Food Institute assesses risks that can be found in the entire ‘from farm to fork’ chain to ensure the safety of food so that neither Danish nor international consumers will get sick from the food they eat.

Further reduction in antimicrobial use in Danish animals

Antimicrobial consumption in Danish animals has continued to decrease in 2015, mainly due to a reduction in pigs. By contrast, serious outbreaks of disease among broilers and mink have resulted in an increased use of antimicrobials in these animals. These are some of the findings in the annual DANMAP report from Statens Serum Institut...

Robust data an important weapon in fight against antimicrobial resistance

Robust data on both antimicrobial use and resistance is a crucial weapon in the fight against resistant bacteria. In Denmark this realization led to the establishment of the monitoring programme DANMAP 20 years ago. Since then it has inspired globally. Most recently, the EU Health Commissioner visited Denmark to take a closer look at the...

Considerably fewer resistant bacteria in broiler meat

Considerably fewer resistant ESBL bacteria were found in Danish and imported broiler meat in 2014 compared with the year before. It is the second consecutive year that a fall in the occurrence of this type of bacteria has been registered in Danish broiler meat. However in 2014 the efforts to combat ESBL in the European broiler production...

Decrease in antimicrobial use in animals in Denmark

Antimicrobial use in animals has decreased in 2014 due mainly to decreased consumption in the pig production. In general very little of the critically important antimicrobials – which are used to treat humans – is used in the production of livestock. The use of critically important antimicrobials in companion animals has also decreased...
