Are you interested in conducting cutting-edge research at the intersection of optimization and data science? We offer the chance to join a dynamic and international research environment as a postdoctoral researcher in the Section for Scientific Computing at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. The position is part of a five-year-long project titled “Scalable Optimization for Data Science,” which is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

Together with the project group, you will help shape and develop a new generation of optimization methods for increasingly large and complex problems within data science. The potential applications are wide-ranging since we will focus on exploiting hidden mathematical structure in problem formulations and data sets. Our goal is to develop new computational methods for detecting and exploiting various kinds of complex rank structure in optimization problems that arise in data science. 

Responsibilities and qualifications
As part of a team, you will contribute to the design of new, fast computational methods for optimization problems with certain types of structure such as rank structure and/or sparsity. A specific task will be to investigate how to detect and utilize various forms of hierarchical rank structure, e.g., in non-symmetric interior-point methods. You will also have the opportunity to apply these methods to real datasets as proof of concept.

You will work closely with the rest of the project team (the PI and three PhD students) and have the opportunity to:

  • carry out research and disseminate findings,
  • participate in conferences and/or workshops,
  • teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects and co-supervise PhD students,
  • help organize a workshop and student events.

You have significant experience with mathematical optimization and have a background in a relevant field such as applied mathematics, engineering or computer science.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. The start date is 1 March 2022 or according to mutual agreement.
