Title: Enhanced Security, Privacy & Trust in Internet of Wheels

Abstract: During the past decade automotive cyber-security research has offered persuasive arguments on the use of traditional Public Key Infrastructures for credential management and privacy-friendly authentication services. However, despite the security and privacy guarantees offered by such solutions, there are still a number of challenges to be conquered; ranging from technical limitations when it comes to scalability and interoperability to the (never ending) battle towards bridging the gap between safety and security. Safety and security are often contradictory, yet even more often they come together. These systems shall not harm people and shall not cause economic damage due to errors, and shall be able to withstand and deal with security intrusions, protecting themselves. A rest stop on this road to enhanced operational assurance is the establishment of vehicles (and their internal Electronic Control Units) as decentralized roots of trust (RoT) on an untrusted network unconditionally (i.e., no bounds on the adversary power) and the maintenance of this trust during the entire system life-cycle; from secure production, through distribution in the supply chain.

In this presentation, we will describe how trusted computing technologies and advanced crypto primitives can be used for establishing RoTs in vehicles and how these can then establish and maintain trusted Systems-of-Systems. We will also illustrate how RoT establishment can offer more advanced properties, such as enhanced privacy capabilities, software- and device-integrity (during run-time), secure state determination and secure and verifiable “over-the-air reprogramming” (i.e., software download).
