Environmetrics

Environmetrics is the science of using statistics to understand and solveenvironmental problems. The world faces many environmetal challenges – Howis climate changing? Will the number of devastating floods rise? Howshould our energy systems be designed and monitored? Many of thesequestions are best answered by “computation” – of course in closecollaboration with subject matter experts from the area under study.

Available information often includes appreciable measurement uncertainty, and large spatial and time variations, and is contained in very large andcomplicated databases. This makes it quite difficult to extract clear andreliable information – but statistics gives efficient methods to sift outwhat is important and to answer many pressing questions, and statisticseven makes it possible to judge how certain the answers are.
