The Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (DTU Compute) at Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a Postdoc position in the field of cyber security for smart cities. The Postdoc will be part of the Smart City Cybersecurity Lab (SCL) project (Safer Copenhagen) funded by the Capital Region of Denmark.

DTU Compute is Denmark’s largest environment for mathematics and computer science and encompasses both in-depth theory and practical applications. This allows converting new ideas into innovative products and provides public sector consultancy - to the benefit of both industry and public sector institutions.

You will be affiliated with the Cyber Security Section at DTU Compute, which examines the methods, techniques and tools for securing computer systems that are accessible through a network, typically the Internet. Most networked computing systems are considered socio-technical systems and the successful defence against cyber-attacks requires consideration of a broad range of human and technical factors, from the general security awareness among agents in an organisation to the proper enforcement of security policies through cryptography and access control mechanisms.

Responsibilities and tasks
Cities around the world are investing in information technology to collect data used to create situational awareness and manage assets and resources efficiently. This includes data collected from citizens as well as sensors embedded in the environment, which is processed and analysed to monitor and manage utilities (power plants and transmission systems, water supply and waste management), traffic management and transportation systems, law enforcement (smart policing), health care systems, schools, libraries and other community services. The increasing reliance on such smart city technologies raises a number of security and privacy issues to increase the stability and robustness of the cities and organizations’ operations, and to provide the necessary trust and security for the citizens of the collection and use of data.

The range of heterogeneous technologies from different system providers used to monitor and control smart city systems means that security solutions are poorly integrated and often not correctly configured and operated. Moreover, smart city technologies may expose data about citizens that violate fundamental privacy expectations, e.g. codified in the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Developing a generic model of smart cities that describe abstract processes and sub-systems is therefore important for the analysis and understanding of the security implications of smart city technologies, but it is equally important to understand the specific technologies and system interfaces used in practice. DTU Compute is therefore establishing a Laboratory for Practical Security Investigations (LPSI) to experiment with the security of smart city (and other) technologies.

If you are interested in Smart City Cyber Security, you might be our new Postdoc. The research you conduct will contribute to the following tasks: 

  • Development of a generic model of a smart city that allows the identification of vulnerabilities relating to the deployment of smart city technologies
  • Threat and Attack modelling, including identification of potential attack vectors and establishing the attack surface of a smart city
  • Definition of measures at the strategic (design) as well as the operational level that are adopted to minimize or reduce the risk of a cyber-attack, and provide an efficient and effective prevention mechanism
  • Definition of specific recommendations and guidelines for cities and municipalities on cyber resilient measures
  • Dissemination of results through scientific and popular science publications

You are also expected to participate in departmental teaching at graduate level so you should value visionary and meaningful communication.

You will take part in the establishment of the new experimental laboratory for security examination of smart city technologies; this includes: 

  • Developing sandboxes for both virtual and physical experimentation with smart city technologies
  • Interface the LPSI with DTU’s existing smart campus infrastructure
  • Extend existing and forge new links to industry that may wish to avail of the expertise and resources of the laboratory

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. Preferably in computer science, computer engineering, or networking, with a focus on cyber risk/security, network security, or similar (PhD students who have handed in, but not yet defended their thesis are welcome to apply).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The position is full time (37 hours a week). The period of employment is 1 year starting 1 August (or as soon as possible thereafter).
