DTU Compute seeks a dedicated candidate for a 3-year PhD position in the field of tomographic reconstruction and volumetric segmentation. You will be part of the Section for Image Analysis and Computer Graphics, where we develop methods for processing and analysing 2D and 3D data. Our research is application-driven, and we have a strong collaboration network both within DTU and externally, with industrial partners and international large-scale imaging facilities.
Your PhD project will be part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network, “Multiscale, Multimodal, Multidimensional imaging for EngineeRING”, in short, MUMMERING.  The network is concerned with interdisciplinary R&D and training in 3D imaging and its application in materials and information science. As a PhD student in the MUMMERING network, you must undertake physical transnational mobility in line with the rules for European Training Networks, i.e., you will need to move from one country to another in your new position.

Scientifically, the network addresses the challenges 3D imaging must overcome in order to be a workable tool in materials science and engineering. A common pipeline for analysing 3D imaging data involves tomographic reconstruction and subsequent volumetric segmentation. Development of efficient, robust and versatile tools for reconstruction and segmentation is therefore crucial for MUMMERING.  
Responsibilities and tasks
Your PhD project will focus on developing algorithms for simultaneous reconstruction and segmentation of the projection data, with a special focus on the application of geometrical models for obtaining the segmentation. In particular, you will be working with triangular and tetrahedral meshes. The goal of the project is to develop tools for 3D tomographic segmentation, which will be shared with both academic and industrial partners.

We expect that you take full responsibility for your PhD project and your learning under your experienced DTU supervisor’s guidance. Moreover, we expect that you will be actively involved with and seek benefit from: 
  • The training provided by the MUMMERING network
  • Secondment to the industry partner, and potentially other network partners
  • DTU Compute’s excellent research infrastructure
Via the mandatory network training provided by MUMMERING, you will participate in summer schools, workshops, and scientific meetings together with top scientists and your 14 fellow PhD students in the MUMMERING network.

Candidates should have a Master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the Master's degree in engineering.

Candidates shall moreover comply with the H2020 definition of an Early-Stage Researcher, i.e., be in the first four years of the research career, and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree.

As a candidate, you will need to have a solid background in mathematics and good programming skills. Experience with image analysis, geometry processing and tomographic reconstruction is an advantage. Furthermore, you are expected to have good teamwork skills.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
