DTU Compute’s Section for Image Analysis and Computer Graphics, would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting August 2017. The project is financed by the MADE Digital Innovation Fund Denmark project. 

Our department DTU Compute is an internationally unique academic environment spanning the science disciplines mathematics, statistics and computer science. Project Description
This PhD project is a part project carried out in the “Sensor Technologies and Production Data” work package of the MADE Digital project. The project will be carried out in collaboration with a group of strong industrial partners including LEGO Systems, InMold, IH Food, B&O, and VOLA, aiming at creating new and better methods for assessing the state of objects with challenging geometry and radiometry.

Optical sensors are used extensively for acquisition of surface geometry and spatially varying reflectance. The configuration and procedure is however quite different in the standard acquisition techniques for geometry versus reflectance. Light scattering causes defects in structured light scanning of geometry, for example, while geometrical features complicate reflectance acquisition quite significantly. With mathematical modeling of material appearance based on light scattering, we believe that it is possible to acquire geometry and reflectance simultaneously. In such an approach, we would use the defects due to light scattering to infer reflectance properties. With reflectance properties, we can infer surface geometry even for glossy objects like metals or translucent objects like plastic. With surface geometry, we can improve the reflectance acquisition. The aim is a progressive technique where we can exploit many potential synergies between geometry and reflectance acquisition.

Candidates must have a master degree in mathematical modelling and computing (MMC), digital media engineering (DME), computer science and engineering (CSE), applied mathematics, or equivalent academic qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates who can document experience with computer vision, image analysis, computer graphics, or radiometric modelling. Furthermore, good command of the English language is essential.    

The candidate is expected to have good communication skills and a strong background in laboratory work dealing with at least one of the research areas that the described project touches:  

  • Radiometric Modelling (e.g. BRDFs in computer graphics)
  • Radiometric Measurements
  • Computer vision and 3D scanning, using e.g. Structured light, Multiview stereo, Photometric stereo

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in the DTU Compute PhD School Programme. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
