X-ray screening where the internal part of bags and other luggage is imaged is essential for security, but typically this is based on maual inspection of images. CIL2018 is a project that is aimed at taking security X-ray screening into the new era of automation based on advanced image analysis and machine learning. The project is funded through Innovation Fund Denmark and involves academic partners from DTU Physics, DTU Compute and NBI at Copenhagen University and has private companies as contributors in all fields along the development chain. This consortium constitutes a significant X-ray industrial cluster in Denmark.
 
The project needs a highly skilled postdoc to conduct research in new possibilities of advancing tomographic reconstruction methods. These methods will be implemented in a commercial security instrument that is being jointly developed in the consortium behind CIL2018. The position is at DTU Compute within the section for image analysis and computer graphics, and the work is carried out in close collaboration with DTU Physics, NBI and the companies.
 
Responsibilities and tasks
The candidate will primarily work with developing computed tomography reconstruction and classification methods with industrial application. A core part of the project is the development of a luggage scanner based on a limited number of X-ray projections and using energy resolving detectors. This work combines traditional mathematical models for tomography with machine learning techniques to allow prior knowledge to be utilized in an advanced and robust manner, such that threat items can be detected even with limited sensor input, and hereby enable reliable automated detection of threat items in luggage.
 
The postdoc project includes research in extending existing 3D reconstruction algorithms to fit the specific application of threat detection. Additionally, the research should seek to extend the reconstruction by incorporating additional information from e.g. object recognition and segmentation methods, machine learning, and utilizing the spectral information obtained from the scanner.
 
Furthermore, is it required that the candidate participate with the rest of the team to achieve the overall goals of the projects to ensure a successful implementation of the obtained solutions with the end goal of building a commercial security scanner.
 
The candidate will need to work creatively to develop key new technologies and identify and bring together auxiliary capabilities both within and outside the project. Specifically, a high degree of collaboration and coordination with the private companies Exruptive and Innospexion is necessary.
 
Qualifications

  • Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent
  • Experience with image analysis preferably advanced feature based recognition, classification methods and machine learning for image analysis
  • Experinece with tomographic reconstruction techniques is an advantage
  • Enthusiasm for working with industry related problems
  • Good programming skills and experience with GPU implementation is an advantage
  • Skills for working in a team

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
 
The position has 21 month duration and is available to be filled from November 1st 2017.
